From the Emerald Isle to the Heart of Africa: Ireland and Kenya Partner for a Better World

The West of Ireland partnership being recredited by the ESTHER alliance

The West of Ireland partnership includes Brighter Communities Worldwide,  Mayo University Hospital, University of Galway, Londiani Sub County Hospital (LSCH) in Kenya, and the Department of Health Services Kericho County. They have a long-standing relationship spanning over 15 years and we are delighted that the partnership has been reaccredited by the ESTHER Alliance. This partnership is grounded in a foundation of trust and confidence, with all partners sharing a common vision: ensuring that everyone, particularly the most vulnerable, has access to quality healthcare.

The partnerships aim is to strengthen the quality of service delivery in Ireland and Kenya. The partnership currently focuses on four main program areas – Trauma Care, Maternal and Perinatal Health, Non-Communicable Diseases, health care workers qualified in Advanced Life support (ALS) and strengthened ALS services. The partnerships main achievements to date include the continuing reciprocal education in obstetrics, tropical medicine, trauma, surgery, paediatrics, perioperative medicine, infection control, and project management. Over the last 12 months, the partnership achieved a 12% increase in antenatal care visits, a 6.9% rise in fully vaccinated children under 5, and a 53% reduction in PMR. In 2024, efforts continued on the Trauma Care program with the commencement of the trauma care centre construction in LSCH Kenya.
